Having worked with Miriam King on a recent portrait shoot she asked me if I would like to work with her again on some more portraits to showcase her hair and makeup. Of course I had to say yes, and now I can share a few examples of her work. Our lovely model for the day was Jess.

Happy Saint David’s Day! Thought I’d celebrate by sharing a couple of photos from a recent portrait session with Rachael.

We were lucky enough to have Rachael’s friend Cilesté with us. She is a professional hair stylist and, with Rachael’s make-up artistry, the photos looked amazing right out of the camera.

Water Nymph – Portsmouth Model Portfolio Photography

One of the nice things about working with models on their portfolios is that the shoots tend to be collaborations. I love to bounce ideas back and forth and experiment to see what works best.

Alice had lots of ideas for this shoot and, before she arrived, I spent time trying different lighting setups.

One of the key things with the lighting, besides getting the best possible quality of light, was safety. In this instance we were working with a lot of water and mains electricity. Not a great combination! Fortunately I had had the idea to bounce the light off of the white ceiling to try and get soft wrapping light and this allowed me to have the light only just inside the room, far from the water.

The shot up top is a tight crop intended to look like Alice is in a pond or close to the shore of a lake. In reality, as the following image shows, she was in a bathtub!

To make the water go green Alice had the idea of using a bath bomb. It worked well, though the colour was a little weak requiring a boost it in post production.

She also brought leaves and flowers, which added to the authenticity. The leaves alone worked well for the pond shot whilst the flowers brought a lot more colour and worked better for the more artistic images we did later.

Alice was such a pleasure to work with I really hope we can collaborate again in the future.

Couture Hair and Make Up

One of the best things about being a photographer is getting to meet and work with new and interesting people. A few months ago, at a wedding fair in the Thorngate Halls, Gosport, Lorna and I met Claire. She runs Couture Hair and Make Up and, since she was all set up nice and early, she did Lorna’s hair before the fair opened.

They got to chatting, as you’d expect ;o) and ended up planning a shoot!

Work schedules being what they are it took a little time, but we managed to organise a day early in April to work together. The main goal was to create some photos to show a few different wedding hair and make-up styles. Claire organised two fantastic models to work with, Cara and Charlotte, and we worked at Claire’s home where she has her salon.

These are just a few of the images we created. After shooting the wedding styles we had some fun with a vintage look too!

We all had a fantastic day working together. It was certainly a lot of work, but a lot of fun too and I am sure Claire and I will work together again soon. It’s only a matter of time until we are both booked for the same wedding I’m sure.

I want to say a big thank you to Charlotte and Cara too. They were very professional but great company all day long. And also to Lorna, for creating the bouquets. Thank you!

Take care
