Opal is an aspiring model from Basingstoke. With few images in her portfolio, and being very new to standing in front of a lens, we decided to start with a simple portrait shoot in the park.

The memorial park in Basingstoke has quite a variety of locations to use. It would be a shame not to take advantage of everything it has to offer, but time limited us to just a small area. Which gives us lots of other options if we should do another session in the future.

Underworld

I love Kate Beckinsale’s character, Selene, in the Underworld films and thought it would be fun to create some images based on the artwork for the movie posters.

Way more photoshop that I usually do, but always good to push the boundaries once in a while and get out of the comfort zone.

Many thanks to Suzy for agreeing to play the Selene role and let me lose with Photoshop!

One of the nice things about working with models on their portfolios is that the shoots tend to be collaborations. I love to bounce ideas back and forth and experiment to see what works best.

Alice had lots of ideas for this shoot and, before she arrived, I spent time trying different lighting setups.

One of the key things with the lighting, besides getting the best possible quality of light, was safety. In this instance we were working with a lot of water and mains electricity. Not a great combination! Fortunately I had had the idea to bounce the light off of the white ceiling to try and get soft wrapping light and this allowed me to have the light only just inside the room, far from the water.

The shot up top is a tight crop intended to look like Alice is in a pond or close to the shore of a lake. In reality, as the following image shows, she was in a bathtub!

To make the water go green Alice had the idea of using a bath bomb. It worked well, though the colour was a little weak requiring a boost it in post production.

She also brought leaves and flowers, which added to the authenticity. The leaves alone worked well for the pond shot whilst the flowers brought a lot more colour and worked better for the more artistic images we did later.

Alice was such a pleasure to work with I really hope we can collaborate again in the future.

More soon,

Rich

Snow Queen – Portsmouth Model Portfolio Photography

A bit of an unusual request, a Snow Queen themed photo shoot in the middle of summer. My first thought was of Narnia and the White Witch. After the return of Aslan the lion, the endless winter turns to spring as the witch’s grip on the land ends. So, with this in mind, I thought we could do a White Witch / Snow Queen in Summer after all.

Sophia, the model, enlisted the talents of Katie to do her hair and make-up, and Dolly the stylist to provide the clothes and accessories. Katie and Dolly also created crowns specially for the shoot.

There is more PhotoShop work on these than I usually do, but I wanted the mood to enhance the look. Though they looked great straight out of the camera, the greens and yellows didn’t fit with the cool blue of the make-up, so I cooled the background and darkened the edges to pull the focus in towards Sophia and to also add a bit of a feeling of mystery.

It would be great to do this again in the middle of winter with snow on the ground and bare trees, but I am pretty happy with the results.
